Huck

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Hello, my name is Hucklberry Finn and i am 13 years old. Me and my friend Tom Sawyer found a lot of money and my dad only wants it for alcohol. I used to live with my pap but Widow Douglas took me in. “Widow Douglas took me in and tried to make me civilized, but it was tough living in a house all the time and how boring she is.” I’d rather be outside in the wild then be cooped up in a house with the same women the whole time. I ran away with Tom Sawyer and we decided we would start a band of robbers, but that didn’t end up going as planned. Within a few days, pap was back. He captured me and brought me to an old cabin in the woods. After three days or so i had enough. That night i snuck out of the cabin and went down the river on my canoe. I stopped on the edge of the woods were no one usually goes and no one lives. Then, as i was walking, i saw a nigger. His name was Jim, next thing i know, me and him are pretty good friends and we work as a team. We want to get to Cairo, but on the way we have met many obstacles. So far, the biggest obstacle is the duke and the king. They pose a huge threat to Jim and I, and we need out.

Mark Twain

Mark Twain Interesting Facts: One fact about Mark was that he hated school. You could see that through his character Huck Finn. Huck Finn doesn’t enjoy being civilized and doesn’t prefer being in school and learning about it or religion. Mark Twain could have shown how he really feels toward education through Huck. It is a coincidence that Huck and Mark Twain hated school and would rather be uncivilized.

Discussion Questions

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

1. If Tom didn’t influence Huck as much as he does, how would the story be different?

2. Huck decides to run away with Jim, what do you think is his plan since everyone thinks that hes dead?

Passage Discussion

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

“Next day he was drunk and he went to judge Thatcher’s and bullyragged him and tried to make him give up the money, but he couldn’t, and then he swore he’d make the law force him” This passage is discussion worthy because it shows mainly why Huck ran away from Pap and the conflict that Huck has with his father and the money that he and Tom found. Pap doesn’t care for Huck, he only wants him around so he can get money for alcohol. This is important because this plays a big part in the reason Huck makes certain decisions that affect him greatly.

Tom and Huck

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

Tom Sawyer does not have a big part in the book as an actual character. But, Huck refers to him multiple times throughout the book. Tom influences Huck and heres an example how. Tom says “Now we’ll start this band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyer’s Gang.” “Everybody that wants to join must take an oath, and write his name in blood.” Everyone agreed to do this, including Huck without second guessing himself. He looks up to Tom and is influenced by him a great amount. Huck’s admiration for Tom is extreme. Huck asked Miss Watson about the good place. Huck asked Miss Watson if Tom Sawyer would be there to. He then later states that is glad that he would be there because he wanted him and Tom to be together.

Themes

The theme that i decided to choose was racism. “They said that he could vote, when he was at home. Well, that let me out. Thinks I, what is the country a-coming to? It was ‘lection day, and i was just about to go and vote, myself, if i weren’t to drunk to get there; but when they told me there was a State in this country that would let that, nigger vote, i drawed out.” This reveals that Pap is extremely racist and hates black people. Hes also a drunk, but, he became very upset when he found out that black people could vote in certain states.
