Morgan Farrell: Jim

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

My name is Jim and I am a run away slave. The reason why I ran away was because Mrs.Watson, my owner, was offered to sell me for eight hundred dollars. I would have been taken away and sold to someone else. So my plan was to run to an island where no one could find me. Then I ran into Huck and at first I thought I was seeing a ghost because Huck was supposed to be dead! When we had left Huck had stolen a canoe and a raft. Huck was in a canoe and I on the raft when all of a sudden we split apart. I was yelling for Huck almost the whole night. In the morning Huck was on the raft and he had told me that he was there the whole night. Then I realized that there were leaves and branches all over the raft which meant Huck was lying to me. I said “What do dey stan’ for? I’s gwyne to tell you. When I got all wore out wid work, en wid de callin’ for you, en went to sleep, my heart wuz mos’ broke bekase you wuz los’ ” I was mad.

In chpater 28 what did Huck tell Mary and explain what  Huck’s plan is  that Mary said she would help with?

http://quotations.about.com/od/marktwainquotes/a/twainracist.htm     http://classiclit.about.com/od/marktwainfaqs/f/faq_mtwain_slav.htm I searched ” Was Mark Twain Racist? I found out that even though Mark twain used racist remarks in ” The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” he is not truely racist. People believe that Mark uses racist comments because of the time period in the book. Mark Twain also grew up seeing the things that slaves went through and how they were treated due to his Father and his uncle. His father was a judge but he also had traded slaves and his uncle owned multiple slaves. Maybe this book is actually filled with information that Mark wanted to show his readers. May be Mark Twain felt sympathy for the slaves instead of making them work hard. I think that Twain actually wanted to teach people that the people that are being racist are cruel and that they shouldnt judge people on how they look.

I believe that Mark Twain uses Huck as himself and Pap as Mark’s own father. Huck is living this life where some people see black people as being dangerous where huck doesnt know who to really believe. Huck sees them as his friends when Pap comments about how they shouldnt be able to vote or go anywhere white people like himself do. Pap says ” It was leaction day, and i was just about to go and vote, myself, if i warn’t to drunk to get there; but when they told me there was a state in this country where they’d let that, nigger, vote, I drawed out.”

1a. Superstition- b.Miss Watson’s nigger, Jim, had a hairball as big as your fist, which had been took out of the fourth stomach of an ox, and he used to do magic with it. He said there was a spirit inside of it, and he knowed everything. c.This passage reveals that Jim really believes in the spirits and believes in bad and good luck.

2. Tom says: ”Now we’ll start this band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyer’s Gang.Everybody that wants to join has got to take an oath, and write his name in blood. Everybody was willing.

3.Passage 1- ” It’s a dead man. Yes, indeedy; naked, too. He’s ben shot in de back. I reck’n he’s been dead two or three days. Come in, Huck, but dont look at his face- it’s too gashly.” Page 53     This shows that there is someone out there that is killing people and they don’t want to bump into them.

Passage 2-

” I took the axe and smashed in the door- I beat it and hacked it considerable, a-doin it. I fetched the pig in and took him back nearly to the table and hacked into his throat with the axe, and laid him down on the ground to bleed.”

This passage shows how Huck is very inteligent and can defend himself.

Passage 3-

“It was ‘lection day, and i was just about to go and vote, myself, if i warn’y too drunk to get there; but when they told me there was a State in this country where they’d let that, nigger vote, i drawed out. I says I’ll never vote agin.

This shows how much hucks pap is racist and think that Pap think people see him as someone to look up to and that no one else is going to ever be as great as he is. Pap wants to shine above everyone else.

Discussion Questions -  1. Who do you think killed the person in the house that Huck and Jim went  into? Also, who do you think is the person who killed him?

2. Why is Pap on the boat trying to search for Huck when really he doesnt care about what happens to his son?

3. When Huck makes the statement about ” They are coming for US!” What does this symbolize between Huck and Jim?
