Amity Lloyd: Huck

1) My name is Huck Finn. I have delt with Pap abusing me, and attempting to kill me. He thought that I was the Angel of Death. Pap was almost always not sober, So it happened a lot. When he kidnapped me and locked me in his cabin, he would leave for a couple days just to buy alcohol. The longest he left me was for 3 days without food. Pap was also a racist. Im against it. My bestfriend Jim is black. Also,  I was living in the wilderness for a while but then I had to learn how to be “civilized” because Widow Douglas took me in. When I stayed with the Grangerfords they were really nice. I realized that they were fighting for a long time for no reason. I think it’s pointless to fight for a long period of time, with out knowing the reason why, while innocent people get killed.

2) “I felt verygood; I judged I had done it very neat- I reckoned Tom Sawyer couldn’t a done it no neater himself. Of course he would throw more style into it, but I can’t do that very handy, not being brought up to it”, (pg 197) I chose this passage because it shows that he still looks up to his best friend and is comparing himself to Tom. It shows he does care and wish Tom could be there with him.

http://quotations.about.com/od/marktwainquotes/a/twainracist.htm    I found out that Mark Twain was not racist.  He often showed that he was not racist by making different quotes. “I have no color prejudices nor caste prejudices nor creed prejudices. All I care to know is that a man is a human being, and that is enough for me; he can’t be any worse”, He said.

Mark Twain uses satire in this novel by making the worst characters like Pap be racist. He is trying to show that being racist is a big problem in society. Mak Twain uses Huck to point it out that being racist is a bad thing. “It was ‘lection day, and i was just about to go and vote, myself, if I warn’t too drunk to get there, but when they told me there was a State in this country where they’d let that, nigger, vote I drawed out. I says I’ll never vote again”,(29) Pap says. This shows how strongly he feels about racism.

“He said we ought to bow when we spoke to him, and say “Your Grace” or “My Lord” Does Jim and Huck actually believe the stuff the Duke says?

1. A) Abuse. B) ”Pa, he hadn’t been seen before.. He used to always whale me when he was sober and could get his hands on me..” (pg 13) C) This passage reveals that Pap is abusive towards Huck wether he is drunk or sober.

2. Tom Sawyer has a strong influence on Huck. “When we was 10 foot off, Tom whispered to me and wanted to tie Jim to the tree for fun.; but I said no; he might wake and make a disturbance…I didn’t want him to try. I said Jim might wake up and come. But Tom wanted to resk it; so we slid in there and got 3 candles, and Tom laid 5 cents on the table for pay”. (pg 8) The passage reveals that Huck admires Tom and even when Tom does the wrong thing, Huck goes and listens to him.

3. Passage 1 “Git up and hump yourself, Jim! There aint a minute to lose. They’re after us!” (Pg 65) This is imprtant because it shows that Huck doesn’t care what color or race Jim is; That he wants to be Jim friends. Passage 2 “He chased me around and around the place, with a clasp knife, calling me the Angel of Death and saying he would kill me and then I couldn’t come for him no more”, (Pg 31) This shows how Pap is drunk again, and resorts to abuse, and wanting to kill his own son. Passage 3 “I did wish Tom Sawyer was there, I knowed he would take an intrest in this kind of buisness, and throw in the fancy touches. Nobody could spread himself like Tom Sawyer in such a thing”, (Pg 35) This shows how Huck admires his best friend and wants him there.

4. Question #1 -What would be an easy way for Huck and Jim to survive with out being caught? Question #2 -How does Hucks personality change from when he lived with Pap to when he lived with Widow Douglas?
