1.  This article says that Mark Twain experienced slavery first hand at his own household. Even his uncle owned 20 slaves.  Although Mark Twain grew up with having slaves be a part of his life, he is not racist. He has a quote where he says “The skin of every human being contains a slave.” This shows that Mark thinks that all people are equal and should be treated that way.

2. This novel has a lot of examples of satire in it. Jim is the main example of this because everyone makes jokes by making Jim believe stuff that is false. It is obvious to readers that Jim does not have a lot of common sense because he believes almost everything that people tell him. An example of this is when Huck tells Jim that the time they got separated in the fog was just a dream that he had and Jim believed him. Huck finds this funny but when Jim finds that it actually was real, he gets upset that Huck used his stupidity to his own amusement.

3. We find out that Huck and Jim are still heading south and they don’t know where their going, do you think this is smart or not? Do you think they will get caught because they have no plan or do you think they will eventually turn back around and head up north?

1. One theme in Hick Finn is racism. It is a big part of the story line and very evident when Pap speaks about it. In one of the chapters Pap states that if black men would be aloud to vote he would “never vote again as along as he lived.” He says he does not know what the country is coming too. These statements show that Pap is a racist and he makes it known.

2. There is an example in Chapter 7 when Huck is faking his own murder. There is a quote that says “I did wish Tom Sawyer was there, I know he would take interest in this kind of business, and throw in the fancy touches.” This shows that Huck admires Tom and he wants to be like him. Huck wants to be like Tom and wants to impress him.

3. “”I didn’t notice anything at first, but next I did. There was a cross in the left boot-heel made with big nails, to keep off the devil. I was up in a second and shinning down the hill. I looked over my shoulder every now and then, but I didn’t see nobody.” (Pg. 18) This is when Huck realizes that Pap is back in town. It shows that he is very fearful of Pap.  ”The nigger run off the very night Huck Finn was killed. So there’s a reward out for him-three hundred dollars.” (Pg. 59) This is when Huck realizes their after Jim because first, he ran away, and second, people think he is responsible for the murder of Huck Finn. “Git up and hump yourself, Jim! There ain’t a minute to lose. They’re after us!” (Pg. 65) This line shows that Huck Finn doesn’t care what race Jim is, and that Jim is his true friend and he thinks of them as a team.

4.

a) Do you think it was significant that Jim told Huck not to look at the face of the man who was dead in the flooded house? Or do  you think Jim seriously thought it was really gross and didn’t think Huck should look?

b) Do you think Huck’s choice to fake his murder was a smart choice or not?
