The theme that I chose to use is superstition. Several characters and instances show superstition. An example of this is shown through the character of Jim. Several situations in the story reveals that Jim is superstitious. An example of this is in the passage where Huck reveals himself to Jim, who believes he’s dead. When Huck reveals himself Jim replies ” Doan’ hurt me-don’t! I hain’t ever done no harm to a ghos’. I awluz liked dead people, en done all I could for ‘em. You go en git in de river agin whah you b’longs en doan’ do nuffin’ to Ole Jim, ‘at ‘uz awluz yo’ fren’.” This shows that Jim has superstitions about ghosts.

The question that I asked is “Was Mark Twain racist?”. The article that I found explained that although he made comical remarks concerning races, he never made actual racist remarks. In another part of the article he explains that after seeing the ravages of the civil war he deeply sympathizes with the other color. In conclusion, I do not believe that Mark Twain was a racist.
