Walia 1 and 2

1

I think his thoughts are justifiable because he just witnessed a murder and gets abused everywhere. He gets hit in school, at home, and even on the streets for not major reasons. He got punished by teachers because he did not have books, books that his family can’t afford. He has to take food out of a dumpster because because his family can’t afford to buy food. He has to run out of his house when the raids occur, so he does not go to jail.

It was bad enough he is beaten almost everyday but then he witnesses a murder, it just put everything or the top. He is only 10 years old, seen his mom getting beaten by his dad is a very scary moment for most of us but in front of him a man was killed by two people. He has nightmares about it everyday. A full grown man gets pretty scared when a man is killed and he is only 10 years old which is 100 times worst. I think his thought were justifiable under his circumstances.

2.

The tsotsis caught up with him before he even reached the street. Their gleaming weapons of death remorselessly went about their unfinished, infernal mission. Pg 164

I chose this because it would be a horrible thing to witness and you would have nightmares about it everyday. Another reason why i chose it was because it basically summarizes the chapter about what happened to the man and how mark was feeling. Mark later tells us that he remembers it everyday and keeps him feeling down. It was the turning point of Marks life because he wanted to end his life.

Walia3

Mark was thinking about killing himself because of depression and pain, what would you do in his position. Would you end your life or find reason to live, like Mark? Why or why not?

Mandleve said that if Mark came peacefully to school he would not get punished by the teachers badly. Mark said Mandleve was lying to him. What would you do in his position. Go with them peacefully or try to escape? why or why not?

Is a dystopian society presented in a more effective manner through a non-fiction text or a fiction text?  Explain your response, citing specific examples.

Dystopia is a state in which the conditions of life are extremely bad. In the fiction book Animal Farm the animals were treated badly by farmer Jones and later by the pigs. In the non- fiction book kaffir Boy Mark was abused by his father and had very little food to survive. I think both have an equal effective manner of showing dystopian society. I a fiction book the author can be more creative while showing the same meaning that would be used in a non-fiction book. For example in Animal Farm Orwell used animals to show what happened in Russia under Napoleon, each animal represented a person during Russian revolution. Every animal besides the pigs and dogs were treated unfairly under Napoleon. The animals worked hard all day and still did not get food to eat. On the other side Mark Mathabane wrote an autobiography called Kaffir Boy about his childhood, unlike fiction books non-fiction tend to be more serious and more seriously taken by readers. It takes place in a ghetto in Africa. He tells us about his life as a kid and it is very sad how badly he is treated. He gets whipped by his father for speaking a different language, police raids seem to happen every day, and he has very little to eat. Both Animal Farm and Kaffir Boy show very horrible conditions of life but, they have different way of presenting it.
